Hushd Avera

Over the counter ‘DIY’ Mandibular Advancement Device.

The Hushd Avera is an oral appliance designed to alleviate snoring in adults. It is an economical option for those who would like to trial the use of a Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD).

The design of the Hushd Avera is based on the clinically proven Hushd Pro Avera, which has two separate arches, that lock together to keep the lower jaw forward during sleep, to enable the airway to stay open. This in turn reduces snoring. The device can be purchased over the counter, and includes everything needed to get started at home

HUSHD AVERA

What it does

The Hushd Avera device is intended to reduce or alleviate snoring in adults.

Each Hushd Avera consists of Upper and Lower dental splints. The Upper splints have two protrusive blocks, one on each side. The Lower splints have dorsal fins that engage with the upper splint blocks. The device is designed to advance the mandible forward to achieve airway opening during sleep. Incremental forward positioning of the jaw is achieved by combining the different upper and lower splints.

Indications for use
  • People who snore
Over the counter

Individuals who would like to try a Mandibular Advancement Splint, can purchase the Hushd Avera over the counter at Pharmacies and Sleep Clinics who stock it, or via the Good Sleep Co. online shop. The package includes everything they need to get started, including instructions for how to fit the device at home.

How it works

Using the device

Before using the device it needs to be molded. The user takes the Upper splint (U) and places it in 90°C hot water for 2 minutes to soften it. They then mold the splint to the upper teeth, by biting down into it for 1 minute. After that they take it out of the mouth and let it set in cold water. This step is repeated for the Lower splints, L1 and L2, one at a time.

Once the device is molded, it is used overnight (or when sleeping), by placing the U and L1 splints on the upper and lower teeth respectively. The block on the Upper splint needs to sit behind the wing on the Lower splint, so that the lower jaw is held forward. This position enables an open airway.

After use, the device is removed carefully one arch at a time. Once cleaned, it should be stored safely in the supplied storage dish. (Precautions and Contraindications are listed in the device IFU.)

Mandibular Advancement

There are 2 advancement positions or ‘combinations’ as standard for the Hushd Avera. Adjusting the combinations (to progressively move the lower jaw further forward) is called Titration or Mandibular Advancement. The starting combination is the Upper splint (U) with Lower 1 (L1). To advance the combination, U stays, but L1 changes to L2.

Monitoring Sleep

To assess a patient’s sleep quality, feedback from a sleep monitoring device like the Good Sleep Test, provides real-time feedback, and the option to generate a Specialist Report. The benefit of the Good Sleep Test is that it’s unobtrusive and can be used at home with ease. Patient sleep data is shared directly from the device to the practitioner, making it a practical sleep-review option for both patient and practitioner.
